June 30, 2008: 100th, ASCAP, and Censorship

Well, we finally have our 100th episode, but without all the pomp and circumstance we had been planning on. 

This week the hosts play "catch-up" with each other. We also replay an interview we did last November with Vincent Candilora from ASCAP about the AACT/ASCAP license that allows community theatre venues to play recorded music during pre-show, intermission, and post-show.   The deadline for purchase or renewal is August 31th...so we thought a refresher was in order.

We also discuss a case of censorship that is going on in Illinois surrounding the show Ragtime.

Judy Cullen from the Washington State Community Theatre Association, stops by to share her personal opinions on our suggestions for the theatre revolution, including an epiphany of her own.

April 21, 2008: A Theatre Revolution Begins

This week we suspend our normal format in order to have a spirited discussion on how to turn around the decline in local theatre and make it a growing and viable in the 21st century....since we are eight years into it already!

We discuss the four following radical recommendations:

1. ELIMINATE the term "community theatre"
2. Flip the new play development process from a top-down (Broadway down) model to a grass roots model with Broadway being the "pinnacle" of the process.
3. Theatre companies with their own venue need to split the organization. One group should solely run the venue, while the other group solely produces the shows.
4. Create a new, flexible,season pass, that can be used for any shows the bearer wants....at any participating theatre.

This week we turn the spotlight on the Historic Fayette Theatre in Fayetteville,WV.  Gene Worthington, Artistic Director of the organization, fills us in on the history of the group, its venue, organization, and future plans.

Murray tells us about the history of the organization and it growth into one of the largest community theatres in the country. He also discusses how they deal with the challenges of an audience comprised of full time residents, part-time residents, and tourists.

Ok. First off, apologies for getting this episode out so late. Sometimes life gets in the way....and boy did it ever this week.

This week Chris brings us some information and interviews he collected at the SouthEastern Theatre Conference annual convention in Chattanooga, TN.

We also spend some time with Elizabeth Maupin, theatre critic with the Orlando Sentinel. Elizabeth wrote an entry in her blog "Attention Must Be Paid" about whether or not people involved in theatre actually go and see other theatre productions.  We also discuss it afterwards with our Second Life studio audience.
